Silicon Bandits came hot into the scene with one of the best first issues of a new series I can remember in some time. As we moved onto issue two I was impressed with how this comic kept the high quality storytelling and art. With issue three about to hit stands does it keep up with the first two? Does it falter in any way? Well lets dive into the issue and talk through my thoughts.
In this issue we get to see the other side of the heist as Mr. Crane deals with the news that someone has stolen his precious Galluim, a resource that fuels his androids. With this comes some realizations as to who is behind it and how it happened. Which leads to possible consequences for future issues. But we also go back to our main characters as they pick up the scraps of last issues events, and try to make things right. I thought overall everything was handled very well. Getting more of the “villain” in this issue brought more context to Aurora and Kenji’s actions from the previous two issues. Having them on the ropes and doubling down on their plan brought a desperation to the team that hasn’t been seen from them. There are also deep moments that lead to the reader thinking more about artificial life, and the creation of free will throughout this issue. I love these conversations because well they are interesting, and it is something that our society is going to have to discuss for real very soon. And without spoiling anything there is another great heist story trope that enters this issue that I absolutely loved. The found a way to make it somewhat surprising and fit within the themes that the comic is dealing with.

As has been the case throughout this series the art has been top notch. I like that in this issue we get to see the art team stretch it’s legs a bit with new scenery that shows a real ying and yang to the city or desert that most of the story take place in. We also see the return of a style from last issue that I found to be really well done(trying not to spoil anything here, that’s why it is a bit vague). The artist’s scenes and characters are on par with previous issues, while the colorist continues to make the world alive with it’s lighting and color pallet.

Top to bottom this issue delivers on what has made this series so great. At times you may feel like it is slowing down to present heavy conversations but balances it well with either dramatic or action packed sequences that keep the pages turning. Magma Comix is making a case for one of the best opening lines for a new publisher in recent memory, and Silicon Bandits continues to be my top pick of their. I wait in anticipation for the next issue. This comic is best suited for those that enjoy heist stories and neo-future cyberpunk stories.
Silicon Bandits #3 will be available at your local comic shop and digitally July 31st 2024. All preview art, cover art, and the review copy of this title were provided by Don’t Hide PR and Magma Comix!
