I have mentioned in the past how I feel, as a consumer, that prices on Kickstarter have gotten too high to be sustainable. This is why I have also moved over to doing more collected editions, or trades if you will, of indie comics on the platform. There are still a few series/creators who I am willing to pay the price to get their work in floppies thought, and this series Frankenstein the Unconquered is one of them.
I discovered this series through my podcast, that’s the Fortress of Comic News podcast for those that enjoy a solid plug, when we interviewed the writers on the show. Since then we have had them on a few times to talk about this series and other comics they work on(below is the most recent interview with Wells Thompson about MechaTon Vol. 1). For me this is the one that best fits into my tastes as a reader.
Frankenstein the Unconquered at it’s core takes the original Frankenstein’s monster mythos and adds a post apocalyptic world in the mix. At it’s core it’s a Conan the Barbarian-esc fantasy story with heavy science fiction elements. When you first meet Frank he is a wanderer who does good deeds not because he wants to but instead because the situation brings him to it. We get to see past events that lead to who he is, 500 years after the original novel, and a path that leads him towards familiar faces and some new ones. It is a well executed tales with art that brings the world together. You can see some of the pages below!

So what is available through this Kickstarter? For starters my digital people out there will be happy that there is a digital edition of the collection. For physical people you have a few different options to choose from. There is the standard hardcover edition and deluxe edition that comes in both hard and soft covers. You can also get plenty of add-on like posters, stickers, pins, other work by the writers, and for table top RPG players a Frankenstein the Unconquered campaign book. A unique idea that the team does as well is the Adopt-A-Page tier which gets you a one of a kind poster of the page you adopted, your name on the page for all printings of the book moving forward, and a special thank you at the beginning of the book.
This is one of those Spotlights where I can say I have read the series and really do love it. I have every issue of it so far, and my favorite part of this campaign is that they are calling it book 1 meaning there will be more. For my readers out there that enjoy dark fantasy stories, very light horror elements, and deeper story telling in their comics this one is for you. I hope you all take the time to check out the campaign page, the link button is below, for more info on the project. And that you pledge to it for one awesome comic book!
Thank you all for reading this post. I hope you enjoyed the read. If you want to support this Substack, and me there are a few ways you can do that.
