Writer-Jonathan Hedrick
Artist-KoolasHeck
Jonathan Hedrick is not a new name for this series but for those that are new to my Substack I will recap my introduction to him. While down visiting my parents in Florida a few years ago I spent sometime hanging out with Travis Gibb, someone who has become a good friend in this crazy industry. We went around a visited some of the local comic shops and talked. While out Travis put a copy of The Recount in my hand and informed me that I was buying it. Later that week I sat down and read the entire series and fell in love with it. Immediately after that I told Travis I need to interview this writer for the podcast and an introduction was made. Fast forward to today and Hedrick has become a regular guest on my podcast, Fortress of Comic News(feels so good to shamelessly plug), and someone who I genuinely enjoy chatting with.
Now for Hedrick’s latest Kickstarter Time Served. With it’s intro it seems like a series that would center around the events of a serial killer who was caught and sentenced to 600 years in prison. I thought it would be about his time served, as the title says, and how a man comes to grips with the horrors he has done while in a place that requires survival instincts. That is not at all what this come is. The lead character Nelson Jenkins actually survives his 600 year sentence and finds himself a free man but the world he returns to is not the one he left. This story is about a man out of time, no not Captain America but a twisted psychopath in a strange broken world. Hedrick is joined by artist KoolasHeck for this project. Kool’s art is hard to explain, which is why I added the preview pages from the campaign below, but is a style that works for this story. I could see him being a regular artist in the Kickstarter community but the projects he works on need to cater to his style.

As for what is available on the campaign well lets talk. There is of course the digital copy of the comic, and for those new to the project make sure to get in early next time for the early bird digital tier of $1. There is also the physical version of the comic that has just one cover from interior artist KoolasHeck. The campaign is really that simple. You can add on digital and physical copies of the first issue, and most tiers come with a bookmark and print set.
The first issue of this issue was a really great example of how to set up a great twist. Jonathan Hedrick is a writer I always want to recommend to people out there. He has a wide variety of series that he does, and always delivers. As always this is a project that I very much believe is worth you time and money, and might I mention that the pricing for this campaign is really great as well. A quick announcement: I wanted to say that I made the decision to put the Crowdfunding Spotlight series on ice for the month of December. I will put this disclaimer at the end of each post through the month of November to remind you all. The decision came down to the simple fact that December is a tough month for crowdfunding. Last year it was very hard to find projects I wanted to bring to everyone’s attention, and when that happens it becomes hard to be excited to write about them. So I have decided that I will do two Retro Re-Read posts a week in December as we ramp back into the Marvel Comics series Rom the Spaceknight. Thank you for the support, and hope you all understand why I made this decision.
Thank you all for reading this post. I hope you enjoyed the read. If you want to support this Substack, and me there are a few ways you can do that. For starters like this post, comment below your thoughts or if you pledged, and subscribe to the Substack to keep getting more. You could also check out the Fortress of Comic News podcast which comes out every week, sometimes twice a week, on most podcast services. Also you can find all the podcast content on YouTube, as well as more at YouTube.com/@FortressComics.
Thank you for spotlighting Time Served #2! And extra thanks for the kind words! 🙏
