I found this issue to be very interesting because it was the comic form of a bottle episode. The entire issue takes place in the secret lab of the secret government organization known as Project Safeguard. This organization is controlled by a Dire Wraith scientist and has been tasked by the United States government with finding and studying alien lifeforms on Earth. This is where Rom’s weapon the Neutralizer is being kept along with Archie Stryker, who you may remember from the first story arc.
After Rom’s capture he is taken to this lab to be studied and dissected by the Dire Wraith scientist. Before she can do this a Wraith leader orders her to kill Rom and destroy the Neutralizer. Against her better judgement she proceeds to do so when Archie is freed and takes control of the situation, which then leads to Rom being free. After a quick discussion, and the woman setting off an emergency alarm, Rom gets back his weapon and forms a plan of attack. Freeing his weapon didn’t come without consequence because it meant Archie sacrificing his life to free it. Soon after this the other people at the lab come in ready to take down Rom, and he makes the decision to banish the Dire Wraith scientist in front of them. That is where the issue end.
This issue was fairly good to end this next story arc. We see Rom back with his Neutralizer, and ready to make the proper sacrifices in order to stop the Dire Wraith threat. I am continuing to really enjoy my reread of the Rom series, and hope you are as well.
With this issue we will once again take a break from Rom the Spaceknight, and return to the wonderful world of Just Imagine Stan Lee Created the DC Universe. I feel like this is a great point to stop, and finish that series. Plus I have something planned for later in the summer to celebrate DC Versus Marvel being reprinted, so stay tuned for that. Fear not though as we will return to my beloved Spaceknight as the adventures of Rom continue in the near future!
