If you have been following my reviews of Deadweights this far you already know that I really loved the first issue of this series and since then have felt a bit underwhelmed. Reflecting on some of those previous critisms I feel some of it has been my expectations for the series but also feel like the second and third issue did some things that feel in the moment like a swerve from what the first issue was going for. So does issue four fix my issues with the series so far, or at least take the series back in a direction that feels more at home?
In this issue we get a small time jump where our two “heroes” Cannonbulk and Bounder are trying to live normal lives in the city. Cannonbulk has fit in well working for a deli, and finding a family to be with while Bounder is having a rougher time as a delivery courier. We also see catch up with Paladin Red who seeks revenge against the two and hires another villain to help him take out the two men. We get back to some of the more light hearted moments in this issue. I truly felt for Cannonbulk because this was the life he was seeking after the events of issue one, and Paladin Red is trying to take that away from him. I enjoyed the moments of normal life the two got to have in this issue as that was the end goal for the men. The superhero moments that we do get were well paced, and had a good twist to it.

As for the art from Sebastian it continues to be the highlight of the series. I thought his work in this issue kept with the tone of previous issues even when we got real life moments like accepting a package from a delivery driver or making a sandwich. Of course the more action packed scene are well done as they have been throughout the series. Sebastian does an amazing job during the city scenes of highlighting the characters in the story while still showcasing the busy streets and backgrounds. I just can’t get enough of his work.

To answer my question from up top, yes I felt this issue started to bring the series back to a place that was more fun for me. I enjoy the revenge story that is now set up between Cannonbulk, Boulder, and Paladin Red. I also like the dichotomy between Cannonbulk and Boulder’s transition into civilian life. Issue four is simply a good issue that could lead to a great finale with two more to go. For those that picked up the last three issues and felt the way I did I say try issue four and see if it comes back to you, and for those enjoying all the issues this should be a great issue for you.
