If you are a new reader to Chris’s Comics Corner then you might not know that I have been following the Gatchaman comics at Mad Cave Studios for some time. So far the main Gatchaman comic, and the Ken one-shot have been good experiences for newcomers like myself. In this four issue series we are following the main villain of the Science Ninja Team to get a closer look at what Galactor is all about.

This issue sets itself up as a who dun it, and quickly turns into an infiltration story. Our main character is a man known as Berg Katse, who is the number two at Galactor. Berg is poisoned an tries to find out who attempted to kill him but quickly discovers there is more to it than just a single assassin hidden in his ranks. As the story goes the twists and turns feel a bit predictable, without spoiling anything I just saw most of the big reveals coming. This was a disappointment for the story development but is saved with some great looks into the evil organization Galactor. We learn what they hope to accomplish and why they see themselves as the world’s saviors. We also get insight into Berg’s motivations, as well as his powers. That part of the issue kept me intrigued and looking forward to more, while the main story arc has a lot to prove in future issues.
The art from Kath Lobo is mostly great. While I thought Kath did a fantastic job of building scenes, giant monsters, and anyone in costume, the scenes with normal people felt flat. Now to be fair they are few and far between in this issue as most of it involves Berg, henchmen, or other Galactor characters but it did stand out when those scenes came up. Her backgrounds are my favorite part of the work. Whether inside the Galactor base, or set outside in a city everything felt lived in and thought out. And for someone doing both pencil and color work the end product is impressive even if slightly flawed.

Overall I thought this issue was an okay start with much to prove. The story fell flat in many ways but provided much needed insight into the “bad guys” of the Gatchaman universe. There is still a lot of time for this story to blossom into something that stands alone but as of right now is only for those that really want more universe building for Gatchaman. I would reccommend this issue for those, like me, that are really excited for Gatchaman and enjoyed the both Gatchaman #1 and Gatchaman-Ken #1 from last month.
Gatchaman: Galactor #1 will be available at your local comic shop and digitally July 10th 2024. All preview pages, cover art, and the review copy of this issue were provided by Mad Cave Studios.
