This first issue of the series blew me away from start to finish. I loved the world built, and the character of Dr. Jacob Eyes. Lanzing & Kelly did an amazing job of making a horror story that felt like it had weight to it, and left me with the message that no good deed goes unpunished. When I started reading this issue my expectations were different than they were for the first. I knew the caliber of horror storytelling the team here was capable of, and I was looking for the hidden message behind this issue. While I left this issue feeling different than the first I still enjoyed my time in the world.
We get a glimpse in issue #2 into the life of Jacob Eyes, and what his motivation really is. I try to stay spoiler free in these review so I won’t go into details but I will say that his quest seems to be very personal. The issue opens with him performing an archaic version of brain surgery as he saves the life of a young girls mother. He requires no payment except to keep the tumor that was lodged in the woman’s brain. Dr. Eyes requires no payment for this procedure, and that is where the story gets interesting. While the first issue made the message very clear I found myself really having to dig deep for it in this one, and I think it is that we learn best through failure.

As I learned in my recent interview with Lanzing & Kelly, this is Eamon’s first published work in comics. That fact blew my mind when I heard it as the first issue was so masterfully drawn, I felt like a seasoned veteran had done the art. Alas that isn’t the cast and it made me so excited to see where Eamon goes in the future. So while reading this issue I was paying closer attention to every panel. I am happy to say that nothing changed. He does a masterful job of building out panels, and characters throughout the issue. Also he added new depth to Jacob Eyes, through his very presence in the issue. Simply put the art in issue #2 is top tier in every way possible.

With the addition of Magma Comix to our industry has come two of my favorite series so far this year. Principles of Necromancy has proven to me that Lanzing & Kelly truly are masters of their craft. It can be hard for me to truly get into a horror title that isn’t classic monster horror, or some blend of action/comedy horror, and with this title they manage to make me scared in the way that I was watching Romero zombie movies as a teenager. I can’t state enough that even if you aren’t a fan of the current horror space this title is worth giving a shot.
Principles of Necromancy #2 is available at your local comic shops and digitally May 15th 2024. All preview pages, cover art, and the review copy of this title were provided by Magma Comix.
