Magma Comix is a new publisher that upon it’s announcement came out with a bang. One of the first comics announced by them is Principles of Necromancy by two of my favorite writers in comics Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly. While I don’t tend to enjoy high fantasy, I do love dark fantasy, and what could be darker in the fantasy landscape than a Necromancer? I knew right away I wanted to read and review this comics.
The story of this issue is introducing us to our lead character the Necromancer Doctor Jacob Eyes. Dr. Eyes sees himself as a doctor that can cure people of this pesky little affliction known as death. He quickly finds a barbarian tribe ready to go to battle but with an issue. Their leader is dying and they beg for the doctor to cure him so he can lead them into battle. As you could imagine things go horribly wrong from there, and that where I will leave it. The remainder of the story is a look into the idea of science or magic going too far, and what should be it’s limits. I was sucked in from page one.

Like most, all, comics the book really flows through its art, from Camon Winkle and Jay Fotos. This team brings such depth to this simple wintery world. While most of the background are fairly simple they breath alongside the story, whether inside of a tent, outside in the snow, or in a blood battlefield. But what really shines with the art is the characters. The barbarians all have a unique flavor to them while at the same time being fully recognized at barbarians. The axes the use feel unique, the different armor they use, even something as simple as the straps across their wrists are all unique to each character. Not unexpectedly the character that has the most thought and vision put into him is Dr. Eyes. He is given a couple of looks in the issue that both give off fear, and innocents. Truly you will love every panel of this comic.
As I finished Principles of Necromancy #1 I desperately wanted issue 2 to read. The way the issue ends with this somber moment in which Dr. Eyes, decides to move forward with his terrible experiments made feel both angry and ready to see his next adventure almost like a accident you just can’t help but look at. This comic is best fit for people that enjoy Dark Fantasy, and horror the most but I have to say it’s a must read. Make sure you hunt one down at your local comic shop.
Principles of Necromancy #1 comes to Local Comic Shops on April 3rd. All cover art, and this review copy was provided by Magma Comix
