I have always had an affinity for the Hannah-Barbera characters. When DC Comics was doing their Hannah-Barbera line it was some of the most fun I’ve had reading comics. Now with Dynamite Entertainment taking over the license I had hoped for these IPs to get a fresh coat of paint. Space Ghost is the first comic out for the new lineup of Hannah-Barbera comics, and a fresh coat is exactly what it gets.
David does a great job of thrusting the reader into the world of Space Ghost. We get to see the myth of Space Ghost and how he ends up being a savior to the people of this world through show and not tell. While this issue isn’t an origin story for him, but is for two longrunning characters in the Space Ghost lore, we get to see a good amount of his power, and learn about his code of ethics. There are also a few familiar faces that pop up for people that are more familiar with this world. For those that may not be familiar the issue read like a new IP. David makes sure that no one is left behind as he introduces elements of the world to the reader, making this a very new reader friendly issue. While the initial story is one of good vs evil, and doesn’t exactly blow your socks off with its originality it does introduce and set up our cast of characters masterfully.

The art team of Jonathan and Andrew come together for some really great panels. Sometimes with comics like this you see publishers skimp on the art thinking the IP will sell the book along, but Dynamite made sure to get a team here that put plenty of blood, sweat, and tears into every page. I was stunned by how detailed this comic was from character design to the background. I couldn’t imagine more perfect art for this comic at all. And what really stunned me was how well Jonathan choreographed the fight sequences. The action was always so fluid, and the major moments popped off the page. The use of colors by Andrew set the scene for major shifts in the book. When the space pirates board the colony ship in the intro the color scheme turns red and shows the reader that something bad is about to happen, and there is more of this throughout the book but I don’t want to spoil anything. Last thing about the art is the character designs. While most of the characters keep their classic looks they are also modernized in ways that make sense for this more cinematic look at Space Ghost. A villain later on in the issue was very familiar to me, and when he was revealed I had a smile on my face because he looked so much more menacing while keeping true to his original style.
All around whether you are new or seasoned to the world of Space Ghost I feel this comic has much to offer. While I will admit I was very much looking forward to this comic, it lived up and even exceeded my expectations. I would mostly recommend this comic to people that enjoy science fiction and/or superhero stories but it seems to lean more toward Sci-Fi.
Space Ghost #1 from Dynamite Entertainment will be released at your local comic shop and digitally April 1st 2024. All the cover art was provided by Dynamite Entertainment while the review copy was provided by David Pepose.
