When Eastman and crew made the decision to explore further into the world of the Last Ronin I was conflicted. The original series was not only a great capping off point for the Eastman & Laird run of the Ninja Turtles, but also signified a mending of fences between the two men. When they made the Lost Years series I gave it a shot and enjoyed the ride that was that comic. The idea of basically rebooting the Turtles with new characters was interesting to say the least, and at the same time felt unnecessary. As I was reading this issue though I quickly saw the vision that the creators had for a next generation of Turtles.
For those that are new I will say I plan to stay fairly spoiler free in this. This first issue does a great job of giving new readers a quick catchup to the events that lead us here while weaving it into the story, and introducing the new characters. The story itself is about the aftermath of the previous arc, where those events leave New York City, and how the legacies of those characters live on. One aspect I really like about the new Turtles is that the designs for them offer unique looks to go alongside their personalities. Each Turtle is a different species. Also we get some superpowers to go alongside that, won’t say much more as it was a fun surprise.
While there are multiple artist on the book they do a great job of melding them together to feel like one cohesive unit. There are some points where it is noticeable that a different person draw this section but they make it make sense with how the story is crafted. I was also impressed with the level of detail in each scene. Even background characters, who’s sole purpose was the get beaten up, looked and felt like real people. You can see in the preview pages below what I am talking about. Overall I though this was one of the best drawn comic issues I’ve read all year.
Overall I really enjoyed my time back in this futuristic version of New York City. This issue proved to me that this version of the TMNT universe deserved to expanded. For anyone that enjoyed The Last Ronin this will be a pleasant edition to that story, and for newcomers it gives enough onboarding to get to caught up(but I would recommend reading the Last Ronin as it is a great comic front to back). TMNT The Last Ronin 2 without a doubt deserves a spot on your pull list this coming Wednesday.
