As I was looking through Kickstarter this week to pick out my spotlight I came across A Haunting on Mars. It looked so familiar to me and I couldn’t really figure it out. That is until I read the description of a REDACTED publisher that published the first issue and has since parted ways with the creative team. Now Zach very cheekily hides the publisher’s name on the page but also shows a picture of the published version in one of his collages. I then remembered that this is one of many of the Scout Comics titles that printed one issue and then quickly were abandoned by the publisher. This is one of many reasons why I stopped really paying attention to them as I would buy issues of comics I found interesting just to see them fade into the darkness. A Haunting on Mars was one of these titles for me. Seeing it being given new life on Kickstarter is awesome as it gives me hope for the other titles as well that felt lost.
This title mixes Sci-Fi with horror on Mars, a dead planet that once had a colony funded by a now dead billionaire. When a team goes to the colony to find out what happened they are met with some dark secrets and darker horrors. Some of you may know that horror isn’t always my bag but I am a lover of science fiction. For some reason when you mix those two genres for me it is usually magic so I was immediately in on this title back in 2023. From what I remember issue one was a great start, and from the art on the Kickstarter page I can tell you it is a beautiful book.
For those that do choose to back the campaign there are some good rewards to choose from. There are multiple issues in this campaign so that means many different variant covers, including metal variants for those that like shiny things, to choose from artists like Ruairi Coleman, Steven Canon, Kelly Williams, Dave Swartz, and Nathan Anderson. For all you digital people there are, of course, digital versions of each issue as well. But my favorite tiers are the more pricier ones. This campaign includes the opportunity to get original art from the series, and an original sketch from the series artist Ruairi Coleman. While these are pricier tier they are also a good bargain for what you get. And to cap it off you can get some of Zach’s previous work as an add-on.
Like I’ve said before I always try to bring you crowdfunding campaigns I believe in. This one is special to me because it was a direct market book that a publisher gave up on and deserved to see the light of day. This is one of the reasons I am so glad that the Kickstarter market exists. I really hope you take the time to click the link below and check it out.
