This Spotlight is another first for this series. It is the first time we are spotlighting a finished series that is looking to fund a collected edition, and it’s the first campaign that I plan on also doing a review post for soon. I also would like to add that Evan Carothers has been on the podcast before, and is set to be on again in a couple of weeks.
The first time Evan came on the podcast he was kind enough to send me review copies of the first couple of issues. I really enjoyed everything I read in those issues, and could complement the art enough. While it takes elements from IPs like Mad Max and Tank Girl it feels very unique in what it does. Having a bad ass character, Claire, at the lead that is also pregnant creates unique story beats. As of this writing I haven’t finished reading the entire collected edition but this one I truly look forward to finishing based on my previous time with it.
Before I get into the rewards section of this I wanted to take some time out to talk about the art in this series. Ben and crew come together to create a comic that looks as good as any comic you can find at your local comic shop. The pencil work here fits perfectly with the subject material. It’s all very detailed but just a bit messy to create a dingy bleak world. The colors could have just been phoned in with dark browns and oranges but instead uses different shades throughout to make sure to showcase the beauty of pencils. You can see for yourself with these preview pages, also found on the campaign’s site.
Now for the fun stuff; what can I get? Well this campaign is sort of a double campaign because they are funding issue #5 and the tpb at the same time. You can get the digital versions of either the fifth issue, if you are a returning backer, or you can get the entire series with the volume 1 digital copy. If you want issue #5 physically there are 4 covers to choose from created by artists Brian Demarest, Ben Worrell, Alessandro Amoruso, and Bugra Batuhan Berah. There is also a physical collected edition of the series with an awesome cover that features a collage of art from the interior art team. What’s really cool here is Evan and crew are also offering a 44 pg one-shot comic, that will be printed in a 6x6” format, that ties into the Toxx universe called Caravan of Corpses with artist Alessandro Amoruso. And if you want more from Evan and Wolven Press you can get all of the comics they’ve done in the past. That’s a ton of cool content to keep you busy.
What I really love about Evan’s latest campaign here is how much content he has thrown into it. It would be easy, and probably more lucrative, to have done this a three seperate campaign. He chose instead to pack this one with everything he has which feels very consumer friendly in a world where we seem to get nickel and dimed. Another thing that is really great here is they plan on getting all physical copies into the hands of customers by late November to early December, which means weeks after the campaign funds. With all of this I can’t help but feel they are doing everything right for this Kickstarter. This is one that should not be ignored. One thing I will add is that Toxx is also being published by Blood Moon Comics. If you would prefer to support your local comic shop, and have some patience, you will be able to get the collected edition sometime early next year.
As I talked about in past posts I’m trying to also spotlight other content creators at the end of my spotlight series. This week I want to take you off SubStack and onto YouTube with Bearded Comic Bro. My man Bearded has been killing it with his YouTube channel latley with some really great interviews, and fun side series that will keep you coming back. Check out his work with the link below.
