This issue was an interesting one to be the last before our break from Rom. Not only was it another retelling of past events but also was a classic wedding issue. As I have read Rom before I know that this one leads into a future for Rom that takes the series into a new direction in many ways.
We open up with the wedding between Steve Jackson and Brandy. Outside Brandy arrives and is still feeling like something is wrong with her husband to be, Steve. For those that don’t remember Steve has been replaced by a Dire Wraith. The story then shifts to a Dire Wraith base where we find Ace O’Conner, a reporter that was abducted last issue, in a sensor deprivation room and who else is there with her but the real Steve Jackson. The two mount an escape from the prison and O’Conner dies while helping Steve. He then makes his way out just to discover that the base is right outside of his hometown Clairton, where Rom first landed thinking it was a Dire Wraith stronghold. Steve makes his way to his auto shop where he conveniently has a hot rod fully fueled up and ready to go. Shift over to Rom who is spending his time reminiscing about his time with Brandy and Steve, giving us the retelling of their relationships. Rom makes his way to the church where Brandy is to be wed and crashes in. After being accused of being a murderer by everyone in the church Rom then discovers that this version of Steve is a Dire Wraith and tries to convince everyone there of what is happening. Just as things come to a head the real Steve enters the church and takes down the Dire Wraith. This forces everyone in the church to come to terms with what Rom has been saying and pledging to help him in his quest to save humanity.
What I liked most about this issue is that it sets up a new status quo for the series moving forward. While the events of this issue where meh at best it does give Rom a group of humans to depend on to help him along the way. While I look forward to getting back to Rom on this series, and I may be continuing to read along and writing these to get ahead, I also am pumped to read a Megaman series that I just recently discovered and was able to get original copies of.
