We start off this issue with the crew mourning the death of their friend, just to learn through Rom’s sensors that he is still alive but fading fast. During this moment Rom tells a tale about the Dire Wraiths destroying a colony planet of his home people to showcase their destructive nature. After leaving the scene so that the authorities don’t see him Rom finds himself at the funeral for the Wraiths he had banished earlier in the series. At this funeral is an elder Wraith who is there to make sure that everyone is on alert about the threat that Rom posses to them. When Rom confronts the elder we learn that the Dire Wraiths also have their own form of magic that can summon deadly creatures. Rom uses the elders magic against him and learns where his weapon is being kept before defeating him. The B story for this issue involves a mysterious alien that also has a vendetta with the wraiths and is killing them in the shadows. After Rom’s confrontation with the elder Wraith he loses power and falls into an empty grave. At the top of this grave we learn that the shadowy alien figure is a reptilian alien known as Serpentyne. He has sworn to destroy the Dire Wraiths and wants Rom’s weapon to aid him in his mission.
My favorite part of this issue is the introduction of Serpentyne. While I enjoy Rom interacting with the Marvel universe, it is great that we are building his own cast of characters to interact with. This being a science fiction story with plenty of space travel it only makes sense that more alien races would get involved. I also love the lore building around the Dire Wraiths and their destructive nature. All around this was another great issue of Rom!
